The Power of Apple

As I wait, for what is becoming my annual Christmas present (thanks Dad), of my subscription to National Geographic, I’m making do with the website. I liked this article on the ‘news’ page about Isaac Newton and why Google had apples falling on their homepage yesterday. I loved two things about this article; 1. It claims that Newton was born two to three months early. Not great now, but certainly hard going in his era. Just shows you that premature babies can catch up on development no problem and 2. he failed at first to shine as a student when at the University of Cambridge. It just shows you never to give up on a student. Who knows who or what they could be, or where their inspiration may come from.

  1. I saw the apples in Google too, but never had figured out why, despite my science background :( I particularly liked the 2nd point in your post. I have noticed that most of the brilliant scientists were never top students of their class when they were studying. I think it has to do a lot with our education system, the importance given to marks rather than independent thinking. Someone who thinks different quickly becomes an outcast.

  2. Absolutely. Marks can be very detrimental, yet our society places great emphasis on them. You think of the people you know who are very clever, but have not an ounce of common sense. Creativity and independent thinking should NEVER be underestimated. It’s what modern socity is based on…
